Exercise from the chapter "Ohm's law & resistance"
Level 3 of 5 · Skills: Calculate
Determine the diameter of a constantan wire (ρ = 0.5 Ω·mm²/m), 20 m long, with resistance 19.9 Ω.
ρ = 0.5 Ω·mm²/m · l = 20 m · R = 19.9 Ω
Parametric exercise: the values change with every draw; these are one example.
Guided problem in 4 steps: unknown, formula, units, data, result.
S = ρ·l/R = 0.5 × 20 / 19.9 ≈ 0.503 mm²; D = 2·√(S/π) ≈ 0.8 mm.
