An electricity lab in your browser

Labo Élec is a free electric circuit simulator with no sign-up. You build your circuits on a breadboard as in the lab: resistors, lamps, cells, switches, motor, potentiometer, wires. As soon as a loop is closed, the circuit is solved in real time (Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's laws) and the schematic view with IEC 60617 symbols draws itself.

Connect a voltmeter, an ammeter, an ohmmeter or a wattmeter, pick the range, read the measurement, blow a lamp with no risk. A simulated clock computes the quantity of electricity Q = I·t and the energy W = P·t.

Who is it for?

For pupils and students following a general electricity course (technical and vocational education, preparatory year for higher technical studies, electrical training), for teachers looking for a hands-on demo to project in class, and for anyone curious to see what happens inside a circuit. The site works on desktop and tablet, in French, English and Spanish.

The 15 chapters of the course

Each chapter has its reminder sheet (definitions, formulas, symbols) and its exercises: basics and units, electrostatics, voltage and current, Ohm's law and resistance, power, energy and efficiency, resistor networks (series, parallel, mixed), real generators, Kirchhoff's laws, capacitors, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, alternating current, RLC circuits, AC power, measurement and instruments. The formula book gathers every formula of the course with its quantities and units.

Three ways to learn

  • Sandbox: build whatever you like, measure, show current arrows, export your circuit.
  • Game: courses made of steps and levels to unlock, stars and coins to earn, from discovering the lab to the full syllabus.
  • Practice: a graded exercise session on one or several chapters, with hints, correction and a skills report (know, compute, build, measure, analyse).

Several hundred exercises: circuits to build, measurements to take, multiple-choice questions, calculations and guided problems (unknown, formula, units, data, result). Bastaya, the lab companion, comments on your circuits and flags wiring mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Labo Élec free?
Yes, entirely: no account, no ads and nothing to install, the site loads in the browser. The project is supported by its users through Patreon.
Where is my progress saved?
In your browser only (local storage): completed levels, stars, coins, session marks, last circuit. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account to create.
Does it work on a tablet?
Yes: the site is designed for a desktop or tablet screen, with a mouse or a finger. On a small phone screen the breadboard is less comfortable; the sheets and the formula book remain readable.
Which course level is covered?
The general electricity course in direct current and the basics of AC, from technical and vocational secondary level to the preparatory year for higher technical studies. In each chapter, exercises are sorted by difficulty level.
Can I use it in class?
Yes, classroom and personal use is free. Every exercise has a direct link to share with pupils, and a sandbox circuit exports to a file that can be imported back.

How does it work?

The perfboard: each big hole is a circuit node. You push a single leg of a component (resistor, lamp...) into it. The 4 small holes around it are connected to it: that is where chips and leads plug in.

  1. Drag a component onto the board: it snaps onto the grid. R rotates it.
  2. To join neighbouring big holes, click Jumper chip in the palette (or C) then drag on the board: a line of chips is laid at once. Bridged holes become a single node.
  3. For long links and for the power supply (placed next to the board), drag a lead from one big hole to another (or to a terminal).
  4. As soon as a loop is closed, the circuit is solved in real time (Ohm + Kirchhoff) and the diagram follows.
  5. Zoom with the wheel (or + / , two-finger pinch); drag the background to pan, 0 fits the board. The + buttons around the board add a row or a column.
