Kirchhoff's laws

Bastaya

Two laws suffice for any circuit: at a node, what comes in goes out; around a loop, the voltages balance. Write them, solve, check in the simulator.

Junction rule: at a junction, the sum of incoming currents equals the sum of outgoing currents (charge does not pile up).

Loop rule: around a closed loop, the algebraic sum of voltages is zero. Choose a direction; an EMF counts + if crossed from − to +, a drop R·I counts − if following the current. With several sources, write as many independent equations as unknowns and solve.

Worked example

Currents I₁ = 2 A and I₂ = 0.5 A enter a node; a single conductor leaves it: what current? Then a loop: E = 12 V in series with R₁ = 20 Ω and R₂ = 40 Ω. Current and voltage of each resistor?

Junction rule: I₃ = I₁ + I₂ = 2.5 A.

Loop rule, following the current: E − R₁·I − R₂·I = 0, so 12 − 20·I − 40·I = 0 and I = 12 / 60 = 0.2 A.

U₁ = 20 × 0.2 = 4 V, U₂ = 40 × 0.2 = 8 V; 4 + 8 = 12 V, the loop closes.

Common mistakes

  • Getting a sign wrong: choose a direction of travel before writing, and stick to it for the whole loop.
  • Writing the same information twice: a loop that is the sum of two others brings no new equation.
  • Discarding a negative result: a negative current is correct, it flows in the direction opposite to the one assumed.

Frequently asked questions

How many equations must I write?
As many as there are unknowns: for n nodes write n − 1 junction equations, and complete with independent loop equations (each new loop must contain a branch not yet used).
What does a negative current in the solution mean?
That the actual current flows opposite to the arrow chosen at the start. Its absolute value is correct; just flip the arrow on the diagram.

Circuit diagram CEI 60617

How does it work?

The perfboard: each big hole is a circuit node. You push a single leg of a component (resistor, lamp...) into it. The 4 small holes around it are connected to it: that is where chips and leads plug in.

  1. Drag a component onto the board: it snaps onto the grid. R rotates it.
  2. To join neighbouring big holes, click Jumper chip in the palette (or C) then drag on the board: a line of chips is laid at once. Bridged holes become a single node.
  3. For long links and for the power supply (placed next to the board), drag a lead from one big hole to another (or to a terminal).
  4. As soon as a loop is closed, the circuit is solved in real time (Ohm + Kirchhoff) and the diagram follows.
  5. Zoom with the wheel (or + / , two-finger pinch); drag the background to pan, 0 fits the board. The + buttons around the board add a row or a column.

Del delete · R rotate · C chip brush · Esc cancel · wheel zoom · drag the background to pan
