Exercise from the chapter "Power, energy, efficiency"
Level 4 of 5 · Skills: Calculate
What is the flow (in m³/min) of a 10 m waterfall driving a turbine of efficiency 0.6, coupled to a generator of efficiency 0.9 delivering 13.25 kW?
P₃ = 13.25 kW · h = 10 m · ηt = 0.6 · ηg = 0.9
Parametric exercise: the values change with every draw; these are one example.
Guided problem in 4 steps: unknown, formula, units, data, result.
P₁ = P₃ / (ηt · ηg) = 24.53 kW; P₁ = m·g·h / t → mass per minute = P₁ × 60 / (9.81 × 10) = 15 × 1,000 kg, i.e. 15 m³/min.
